Their Song Echoes Through Me

Their Song Echoes Through Me is a multi-disciplinary sculptural & photographic piece that explores the concept of human exceptionalism as a main reason for today’s global crises and examines how this sense of supremacy shapes our relationship with the environment, questioning the human tendency to view the Earth and its lands as a possession. It focuses on the environmental aspect of this issue, introduces the concept of humanity’s temporality, and responds to the ideas of land ownership. At the same time, it reflects on humanity’s incapacity to see themselves as impermanent beings within larger planetary cycles and considers its negative impacts as a part of the whole, suggesting looking at human activity from Earth’s perspective. It uses the knowledge about previous life extinctions on Earth as an argument that our thinking about climate change should be reviewed and changed towards an ecocentric worldview by accepting our temporary nature. Combining plant-based printing practices and implementing taken from nature materials, it uses sunlight to create temporary imagery.

Printed with anthotype process that uses plant-based pigments for creating light-sensitive emulsion. In this case, spirulina powder was used as a colour base and alcohol for pigment boost, that was then layered with acetate image and exposed to the sunlight. The appeared contact print is a result of plants’ pigments, sunlight and artist’s input. Cut in half and sanded tree log was used as a book cover. It was then sewn with waxed denim thread.
